Privacy policy
Draft, October 2026
This policy explains what the Tonada apps and the website at tonadaapp.com collect, why, and your rights under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018. The controller is TBD.
What we collect
- Account data, if you create an account: your email address and a hashed password, stored by our authentication provider (Supabase).
- Learning data: results, review schedules and progress. Stored on your device; synced to our database (Supabase, EU) only if you sign in.
- Voice clips, only when you use the sound check and only after you agree: sent to Microsoft Azure Speech in the UK South region for processing and not kept afterwards.
- Pseudonymous usage analytics (PostHog, United States), which you can switch off in Settings.
- Purchase records from Apple or Google, to confirm your subscription.
Why we use it
- To run your lessons, reviews and progress (contract).
- To sync your progress across devices if you sign in (contract).
- To check pronunciation when you ask for a sound check (consent).
- To improve the app from aggregated usage data (legitimate interests; you can opt out).
- To confirm subscriptions and meet tax and accounting duties (legal obligation).
Who processes it
- Supabase (EU): accounts, database, server functions.
- Microsoft Azure (UK South): speech processing and text-to-speech.
- PostHog (United States, under the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses): usage analytics.
- Apple and Google: app distribution, payments and notifications.
How long we keep it
Account and learning data are kept while your account is active and erased from our servers within 30 days of deleting your account. Voice clips are not stored. Purchase records are kept as long as the law requires.
Your rights
You can ask for access to, correction, erasure or a portable copy of your data, object to processing based on legitimate interests, and withdraw consent at any time in Settings. Email support@tonadaapp.com. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
Tonada is for adults and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
We will announce significant changes in the app before they take effect.
